Each year, WKCTC holds the Regional Educators Awards and Scholarship Program, an awards ceremony to recognize people in different professions within the education field. This year, Graves County had several staff members nominated in a number of categories.
Michele Handegan was nominated for the Distinguished Faculty Award (K-5). Handegan is a 21 year veteran teacher and is in her 7th year with Graves County. She teaches 1st grade at Symsonia Elementary. Handegan said she is both honored and humbled to be nominated for this honor. “Not everyone can say they love what they do, and I can honestly say I am eager to see my kids and teach each and every day,” she stated.
Mrs. Vanda Elliott was nominated for the Distinguished Faculty Award (6-12). Elliott has been in the classroom for over 40 years; from 1978-2014, Elliott taught math at Calloway County High School. She retired, then returned to the classroom and spent one year at McCracken County High School, and this is her 5th year within the Graves County School System. Currently, Elliott is in her 4th year teaching math at GCHS. She said many have asked her why she never entered administration, but she said she has always felt led to use her abilities and stay in the classroom. She also stated that GCHS has always been important to her, adding “my husband, David Elliott, was a teacher and coach here for 30 years. All 4 of our children attended GCHS.” She said she continues to feel blessed to be able to work with students.
Ms. Debbie Breedlove was nominated for the Cornelia Reece Unsung Hero Staff Award. Breedlove has been at GCMS for 24 years working as an Attendance/Support Secretary. When asked how she felt about this nomination, Breedlove stated, “I am very honored to have been nominated for this award. It means alot to be recognized for my work.” Breedlove further added, “I love GCMS. It is my second home. I work with some of the best people. We are a family. It is always a Great Day to be an Eagle!!!”
Although she is not pictured, GCHS attendance secretary Milissa Hayden was also nominated for the Cornelia Reece Unsung Hero Staff Award.
GCSD is proud of these ladies and grateful for their hard work and dedication. Thank you for your service to our district!
