GCHS Band director Richard Burchett was named First District Kentucky Music Educators Association “High School Teacher of the Year” for 2019-2020 on Sunday, August 23 at the association’s fall meeting. Mr. Burchett says the honor is particularly exciting and appreciative because it came from someone within District 1 and then was voted on by all music teachers (K-12) within the district. Mr. Burchett’s anonymous nominator said, “‘Under Mr. Burchett’s leadership, the Graves County band program has grown to the largest in its history.” The writer then added this was attributed to Mr. Burchett’s ability to build a wonderful rapport with students and serve as a mentor to them while encouraging them and keeping them excited about the program. Additionally, the nominator mentioned a well-known fact about Mr. B. at GCHS--he is an accomplished bagpipe player, making him all the more unique. Congratulations to Mr. Burchett on this prestigious honor!
