Graves County Schools is committed to moving students and staff forward in a 21st century learning environment. As part of this plan, Graves County High School will allow students and staff to use their own technology devices during the school day to enhance productivity and learning. With classroom teacher approval, students may use their own devices in the classroom to enhance learning.
The Graves County School District welcomes employees and students to bring in personally owned computers to be used for instructional purposes. Please be aware of the items below before you connect your device to the Graves County Network.
- A student or staff member who brings privately owned devices to school is personally responsible for the equipment and all software installed on that device.
- Graves County Schools assumes no liability for any damage to a personally owned device while connected to our network. Any damage to the equipment is the responsibility of the individual who owns the device.
- Graves County Schools will not repair personally owned devices.
- Graves County Schools will not provide software to any device that we do not own.
- Graves County Schools will not service software on personally owned devices.
- All devices must include updated anti-virus software.
- Graves County Schools will not provide internal computer components for personally owned devices, whether as enhancements, upgrades or replacements.
- If personal devices interfere with the district network in any way, the device may be banned from the network.
- Any damage caused by personally owned devices in the Graves County School District is the responsibility of the owner of the device.
- Technology peripherals (printers, scanners, projectors, etc.) purchased privately to be used in the school system must also be maintained by the owner.
- Purchasing perishable supplies to be used in equipment not owned by the district is the owner's responsibility.
- The district retains the right to determine where and when privately owned equipment may connect to the network.
- The student/staff member is responsible for the physical security of the equipment when it is not being used.
- Graves County Schools does not guarantee the privacy or security of any item stored on or transmitted by any privately owned computers.
- Use of the computer/peripheral must adhere to the Graves County School District Acceptable Use Policy.
For privately owned computers being used in District facilities, the Graves County School District reserves the right to:
- Monitor all activity.
- Make determinations on whether specific uses of the computer are consistent with the District's Acceptable Use Policy.
- Log network use and to monitor storage disk space utilized by such users.
- Deem what is appropriate use.
- Remove the user's access to the network and suspend the right to use the privately owned computer in District facilities if at any time it is determined that the user is engaged in unauthorized activity or is violating the Acceptable Use Policy.
Question: I brought my personal device to class but my teacher said I had to put it away. Can I still use it?
Answer: The teacher has authority over classroom procedures. You may use your device when he/she gives you permission to do so.
Question: I need to print something. Is this allowed?
Answer: No, personal devices will not be able to print to district printers.
Question: My device was stolen at school. Who should I contact about this?
Answer: Answer: Bringing your own technology device to school can be useful but some risks are involved as well. It is good practice to record the device's model and serial number in case of theft. Graves County Schools is not responsible for the theft or damage done to the device. If a theft occurs, you should contact a school administrator to make him/her aware of the situation so it will be handled the same way as any other theft.
Question: Am I still held accountable for the Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") I signed at the beginning of the school year even though this is my own personal device?
Answer: Yes. The Acceptable Use Policy for Graves County Schools remains in effect even when you are using your own device since you will be connecting to the district's wireless network. Disobeying the terms of the AUP would be a student code of conduct violation and would be dealt with by school and/or district administration.
Question: Will there be a penalty to my grade if I do not have my own device?
Answer: No. Devices are never required. Therefore, a grade cannot be taken.
Question: Will I be able to access my personal U: drive where I store all of my work?
Answer: No. At this time all drives on Graves County servers are not accessible on personal devices. However, students will be encouraged to use other means to save their work such as the SkyDrive.
Question: Is my child required to have a device?
Answer: No. Students will have access to district owned computers throughout the building.
Question: What steps can I take if my child's device is stolen or damaged?
Answer: Graves County Schools is not responsible for any damage or theft of student owned equipment. Keeping track of the device's serial number, model and type will be helpful as well. Theft or vandalism of any kind should be reported immediately to the school administration and/or resource officer so he/she can take the appropriate steps. Damage or theft is still the responsibility of the owner.
Question: What are the school/classroom rules for using cell phones?
Answer: Smartphones are allowed in the classroom for instructional purposes only. Students are not allowed to text or make calls without the teacher's permission. The Electronic Device Policy will still be enforced.
Question: Will my child's internet be filtered at school even though they are using their own device?
Answer: Yes. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires all public school network access to be filtered.
Question: Some of my students cannot access the network on their laptops or phones. I don't have time in a class period to help them with this. Should I put in a help request with the district technology coordinator?
Answer: Students who cannot access the district's wireless network or who may have technical issues with their device need to take care of this issue by working with their user's manual that came with the device out of the classroom. Directions for logging in to the wireless network are located on the district's website technology page.
Question: I have students in my classroom who are accessing the Internet using their provider's data plan (AT&T, Verizon, etc.) on their smart phones or laptops, hence bypassing the filter. Is this a violation of the student AUP?
Answer: No, this is not a violation of the Student AUP.
Question: I have my own laptop and a smart phone. I would like to utilize these tools while at school. Can I access the wireless network as a district staff ?
Answer: Yes. Staff can also access the district's wireless network. Keep in mind that the network is going to be filtered at the student level for anyone who may choose to access it.
Question: I believe one of my students may have been misusing his device. Should I call the technology office concerning this problem?
Answer: No. Any disciplinary infractions that occur from using technology tools should be referred to a school administrator and/or resource officer. This would be a student code of conduct issue.
Question: Who should I contact if one of my student's laptops is damaged or stolen?
Answer: No. Any theft issues should be handled as you normally would. The Graves County School District is not responsible for any damage or theft of student-owned technology tools. It would be good to remind students to keep a record of the device's serial number just in case a theft occurs.
